About Michael E. Woods
An entrepreneur in your corner
Registered patent attorney Michael E. Woods is a technologist and an entrepreneur at heart.
With degrees in electrical engineering and physics, experience in avionics, and 21 years in
patent law, he's mastered the art and science of patent prosecution. He draws on his
multidisciplinary background to translate the excitement of a new invention into a successful
patent application.
Having patented and licensed many of his own inventions, Michael has an
insider's grasp of the complex patent process. Since he's been there, done that, he knows
how to make the experience as painless as possible for his clients.
Becoming YourPatentGuy
Michael left his first career designing infrared imaging systems and avionics for aircraft
companies and went on to earn a law degree with High Honors from George Washington University
in Washington, DC. Upon graduating, he was recruited by Townsend and Townsend, the West
Coast's largest and most prestigious intellectual property firm. Specializing in patent
prosecution, Michael achieved immediate success and became a partner in just six years.
His impressive resume includes 18 years of practice, first at Townsend and then at McCutchen,
Doyle, Brown and Enersen, where he was also a partner. Michael established a solo patent law
practice in 2002 and has since developed a large and diverse set of clients. Drawing on his
extensive network of trusted patent searchers, drafters, and attorneys, Michael provides the
comprehensive services of a large firm without the associated bureaucracy and overhead.
Rare levels of success
It's an unfortunate truth that about 95% of patents granted never make the transition from
promising idea to income-producing reality, but Michael's clients are enjoying better results.
YourPatentGuy has written many successfully licensed and litigated patents, and has seen his
clients collect millions of dollars based on them. It's a level of success to which most
patent attorneys only aspire.
In nearly two decades of practice, Michael has helped scores of clients achieve patents for
their devices, processes, and systems, in categories including
- Computer hardware and software
- Internet applications
- Ethernet devices
- Mechanical and electromechanical devices
- Sports, recreation equipment and toys
- Printing and packaging
- Business methods
- Investment systems
- Semiconductor devices and processes
- Biometrics
- Satellite guidance
- Uranium enrichment
- Community-building systems
